Of the seven mammalian sirtuins, the SIR2 ortholog Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) plays an essential role in improving neurodegenerative diseases by influencing neuron survival, neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, cognitive function, and neurogenesis (Herskovits & Guarente, 2014). This evidence concerns the gene SIRT1 and neurodegenerative disease.
