The results from an animal model of schizophrenia suggest that blockade of the NMDA receptor at different stages of development, i.e., in adolescence (Aoyama et al. 2014, Koseki et al. 2012) or adulthood (Mackowiak et al. 2013), induces several changes in epigenetic regulators, such as histone H3 acetylation and phosphorylation or HDAC5 level in the adult medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). The gene discussed is HDAC5; the disease is schizophrenia.
