CNR1 and Hepatic fibrosis: Figure 3 illustrates the potential roles of CB1 antagonists and CB2 agonists in the intervention algorithm for the treatment of liver steatosis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and its complications. CB1 antagonists additionally ameliorate systemic haemodynamics. However, since CB1 is highly expressed in the central nervous system, treatment with antagonists is often associated with undesirable central effects. Therefore, to date, treatment with CB2 agonists seems to be a more feasible approach to treat liver fibrosis and cirrhosis and its complications.
