On the one hand excessive mitochondrial Ca2+ induce cell death by the release of pro-apoptotic proteins like cytochrome C that is mainly harbored within mitochondrial cristae (Cogliati et al., 2016) leading to neurodegenerative pathologies like Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Huntington’s disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (Britti et al., 2018).
