Borges et al. (2006) reported transient loss of astrocytes in mice dentate hilus early after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus. In rats, they observed about 50% reduction in hilar neurons but no change in astrocyte number (Borges et al., 2006). Another study reported that a sub-threshold dose of pilocarpine (15 mg/kg), following a lithium chloride administration (127 mg/kg), increases GFAP immunoreactivity in the hippocampus (Sun et al., 2016). Here, GFAP is linked to status epilepticus.
