Recognizing the importance of glucose monitoring, especially for insulin-treated patients, the ADA recommends that most patients using intensive insulin regimens (multiple daily insulin injection [MDI] or insulin pump therapy) should assess glucose levels using SMBG or a CGM before meals and snacks, at bedtime, occasionally postprandially, before exercise, and when they suspect low blood glucose.15 Note that this evidence-based recommendation does not distinguish between T1D and T2D; rather, it focuses on the individual need of each patient based upon their treatment regimen. This evidence concerns the gene INS and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
