A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is defined as a spindle, epithelioid, or occasionally pleiomorphic mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract that expresses the KIT protein [1,2], and approximately 2% of all neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract are classified as GISTs [3]. The gene discussed is KIT; the disease is neoplasm.
