This G-rich 26-mer, carrying the sequence 5′GGTGGTGGTGGTTGTGGTGGTGGTGG3′, entered in Phase II anticancer clinical trials, selectively targets nucleolin, a multifunctional protein involved in cell survival, growth and proliferation, overexpressed on the outer membrane of cancer cells (for a recent review covering the state-of-the-art knowledge on AS1411, see P. J. Bates et al. [227]). The gene discussed is NUCLEOLIN; the disease is cancer.
