Patient monocyte-derived macrophages secrete different amounts of active cathepsins and their endogenous inhibitor cystatin C. In line with the inherent patient-to patient variability, macrophage-assisted in vitro migration of MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cell line correlated positively with higher ratio of active cathepsins vs. cystatin C levels (204). This evidence concerns the gene CST3 and breast carcinoma.
