IL6 and coronary artery disorder: A recent randomized controlled trial (RCT), the Canakinumab Anti-Inflammatory Thrombosis Outcomes Study (CANTOS), showed in high-risk CAD patients that canakinumab, an anti-interleukin 1 beta (IL1B) therapy, reduced major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).1 Post hoc analyses of the CANTOS trial showed that individuals with a reduction of plasma interleukin 6 (IL6) level under anti-IL1B therapy experienced greater reduction of MACE.2 These findings raised the hypothesis that canakinumab-mediated modulation of IL6 pathway provides risk-reduction in CAD patients.
