Glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) is the main transporter of glucose in muscle and fat cells and functions to control cellular glucose metabolism and whole-body energy homeostasis, which are both strongly linked to type 2 diabetes (Kubota et al., 2011; Huang et al., 2016; Gao et al., 2017). Here, SLC2A4 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
