The existence of an additional subtype of highly procalcific macrophages, displaying unique microvesicle and microRNA profiles, and containing scaffolds for calcification, has been suggested [77]; the recently discovered intermediate CD40+CD14++CD16+ subset of monocytes may be a promising candidate because the cells are highly inflammatory and are present in high numbers in the circulation of CKD patients with CVD. The gene discussed is CD40; the disease is chronic kidney disease.
