Several biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation, including malondyaldheide (MDA), 4-hydroxynonenale (4-HNE), isoprostanes, protein carbonyl groups, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and interleukin 6 (IL-6), have all been shown to be elevated in PAD patients in both circulation and skeletal muscle, and to increase with increasing disease stage [45]. This evidence concerns the gene CRP and peripheral arterial disease.
