There is no consensus in the literature with respect to performing routine additional laboratory testing (biomarkers LDH, S-100B) and imaging (ultrasonography, chest x-ray, positron emission tomography [PET], magnetic resonance imaging [MRI]) during follow-up in pathological sentinel node staged AJCC IB–II melanoma patients, even in high-risk melanoma patients (stage IIB/C), with some being in favor and others not.31 The argument of those who are against is that three-quarters of first recurrences are detected by patients themselves.
