Although SPINT1 is a serine protease inhibitor with several targets, including ST14 and HGFA, deregulation of the SPINT1/ST14 axis leads to spontaneous squamous cell carcinoma in mice [17] and keratinocyte hyperproliferation in zebrafish [19, 20] preceded by skin inflammation in both models. This evidence concerns the gene SPINT1 and squamous cell carcinoma.
