Long chain n-3 PUFAs may have a protective role against T2DM due to anti-inflammatory properties acting to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokine and NF-κB production,22 and stimulate PPAR-gamma receptors.23 However, a meta-analysis looking at long chain n-3 PUFA supplementation, found it had no benefit on the risk of T2DM.24 This suggests that n-3 PUFAs consumed with other nutrients in fish may lower risk of T2DM.
