To sum up, it becomes unclear whether (a) the association of HLA-G variants with vitiligo here reported was detected because of the high LD with HLA-A*02, configuring a hitchhiking effect; (b) the associations of HLA-A variants with vitiligo reported elsewhere [8,9,10,11,51] were detected because of the high LD with HLA-G*01:01:01:01/UTR-1, configuring an inverse hitchhiking effect; or (c) both genes jointly contribute to vitiligo susceptibility, since G*01:01:01:01/UTR-1 and A*02:01 are among the most frequent alleles worldwide. This evidence concerns the gene HLA-A and vitiligo.
