Culturing the cells in 3D has been shown to enhance many of the therapeutic properties of MSCs including their immunosuppressive, immunomodulatory, and anti-cancer effects [26] We previously showed that MSCs spontaneously aggregate in 3D culture, forming spheroids primed to secrete a variety of potentially therapeutic anti-inflammatory factors, such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), tumor necrosis factor-stimulated gene 6 (TSG-6), and stanniocalcin 1 (STC-1) [25,26,27,28].
