Further study regarding the pathogenesis of malaria-associated ALI/ARDS demonstrated that haemozoin, the waste product of the Plasmodium protozoan, was associated with pulmonary complications, as evidenced by the increased levels of VEGF, proinflammatory chemokines, cytokines, and other inflammatory mediators in Plasmodium falciparum-derived haemozoin-injected mice [2, 3, 5, 6, 8]. Here, VEGFA is linked to acute respiratory distress syndrome.
