Among the two widely used AKI models, kidney ischemia injury and cisplatin-induced toxic injury, at least a dozen miRNAs regulate major pathways involved in inflammation, apoptosis, fibrosis, and the cell cycle, such as phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), heme oxygenase (HO-1), phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3K), forkhead box O3 (Foxo3), B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2), and hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1, indicating the important role of miRNAs in AKI [14]. This evidence concerns the gene FOXO3 and acute kidney injury.
