Importantly, IFI44 could be used as a potential target to regulate innate immune responses after viral infection to control a negative exacerbated immune reaction that could have deleterious consequences for the host or to control the cytokine storm induced during viral infection that has been shown to be responsible, at least in part, for the pathogenesis of some viruses, such as IAVs (22, 23) or coronaviruses (24).
