LEP and metabolic syndrome: Blood levels of adipokines (leptin, soluble leptin receptor, and high molecular weight adiponectin) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and were compared relative to BMI ≥25 kg/m2 and to none, ≤1 component or ≥2 components of the metabolic syndrome (waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting glucose, low levels of high-density lipoproteins, and triglycerides).80 Epicardial and pericardial fat increased while hepatic fat decreased with increasing BMI and components of the metabolic syndrome.
