We can only speculate on the function of this subpopulation in obesity, but as CD56+ monocytes are able to produce more pro-inflammatory cytokines and express, as part of the classical monocyte subpopulation, CCR2, they might be able to migrate toward the adipose tissue and contribute to the low-grade inflammation. The gene discussed is CCR2; the disease is obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
