A recent multicentre phase-II open-label controlled trial of repeated autologous infusions of G-CSF mobilized CD133+ bone marrow stem cells in patients with advanced cirrhosis (versus conservative management or treatment with G-CSF alone) found no impact on liver function nor on fibrosis and the trial was interrupted also because complications of cirrhosis were even more common in the combined therapy group [79,82].
