CD4 and AIDS: Toxoplasmosis is one type of OI, caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasmagondii, and is a common CNS infection in HIV/AIDS patients.3,9,10 It has a global distributionwith prevalence ranging from 11% in the United States to >80% in a number of countries.1 Immunosuppression and prior infection are the most important risk factorswith one study demonstrating 28% probability of CNS toxoplasmosis in seropositivepatients not on ART or prophylactic medications with CD4 count <100cells/μL.2,9
