Additionally, treatment with cotinine, an alkaloid found in tobacco with effects on motivation and cognition, during restraint stress has been shown to prevent both stress‐induced depression‐like behaviours and changes in number and arborization of GFAP+ cells in mice (Perez‐Urrutia, Mendoza, Alvarez‐Ricartes, Oliveros‐Matus & Echeverria, 2017). Here, GFAP is linked to major depressive disorder.
