Enhanced expression of lumican further supports the pro-fibrotic role of SP, since lumican, which belongs to the small leucine-rich (SLRP) family of keratan sulfate proteoglycans, and is responsible for collagen fibril assembly and corneal transparency [41], also has been reported to regulate angiogenesis [42] and cell migration [43], and has been implicated in hepatic [44] and pulmonary fibrosis [45].
