Oxytocin may potentially impact the aberrant activity in a neurocircuitry involved in emotional and cognitive processing found in non-obstetric PTSD samples (Sherin and Nemeroff 2011; Zoladz and Diamond 2013; Koch et al. 2014) such as hyperresponsiveness of the amygdala to fearful stimuli reflected in heightened arousal and vigilance seen in PTSD (Shin et al. 2005; Protopopescu et al. 2005). The gene discussed is OXT; the disease is post-traumatic stress disorder.
