Not surprisingly, abnormalities in autophagy have been implicated in chronic neurodegenerative conditions comprising ALS, where both patients and animal models are characterized by defects in the expression of autophagy-related proteins such as Beclin-1 and sequestosome-1/p62 (SQSTM1/p62) [11]. Here, SQSTM1 is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
