Nonetheless, in our opinion, long-term exposure to HFD is a relevant model for examining the effects of an unhealthy diet and obesity on the myocardium, and will more accurately reflect the situation in patients with moderate obesity, T2DM, liver steatosis, hyperlipidemia and insulin resistance than the models of leptin receptor deficiency (i.e., db/db mice) and type 1 diabetes (e.g., streptozotocin treatment).
