The over-expression of P2X4 in Schwann cells have recently been shown to promote remyelination via secretion of brain derived neurotrophic factor (Su et al., 2019), and another P2X receptor P2X7 has been shown to be involved in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disorder, a common inherited human neuropathy with demyelination (Nobbio et al., 2009). This evidence concerns the gene P2RX4 and neuropathy.
