Domenech et al. (2013) used iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles conjugated with epidermal growth factor receptors, which are taken up into endosomes and lysosomes due to receptor-mediated endocytosis of the target reception, thus suppressing cancer cell growth effectively under an alternating current (AC) magnetic field of 233 kHz, where the use of such a higher frequency is expected to induce a temperature rise in the cells, which is considered as hyperthermia-based apoptosis of cancer cells.
