TNF-α is a pleiotropic, pro- inflammatory cytokine, and is a double-edged sword being the pro and anti- tumorigenic i.e. TNF- α can be cytotoxic to tumor cells, inhibiting the progression of the tumor or causing necrosis and it can also stimulates angiogenesis, proliferation, migration and survival of tumour cells in most cancer cells (Nakano et al., 1999). The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is cancer.
