However, many physiological cells, including erythrocytes, lymphocytes, white muscle fibres and pathologic cells, such as cancer cells, rely on glycolysis providing their energy even in the presence of oxygen.39 It has been reported that oxygenated cancer cells expressing MCT1 import lactate and oxidize it to produce energy.40 Lactate not glucose was preferentially overconsumed for fuelling TCA cycle in human non‐small‐cell lung cancer expressing MCT1 and supporting the cancer metabolism in vivo,41 indicating that lactate can serve as a potential nutrient source for tissues and tumours.
