The mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of PPIs in EoE are not clear, but probably are related to control of any underlying GERD that might be exacerbating the condition, and to the ability of PPIs to inhibit Th2 cytokine-stimulated secretion of the potent eosinophil chemoattractant eotaxin-3 by esophageal epithelial cells [11, 12].
