The embryonic character of these cells and their relation to the germinal lineage (i.e., expression of marker DDX4/VASA) is still poorly understood; therefore, the aim of this study was to determine whether VSEL-like stem cells are also present in a culture of human embryonic stem cells and to sort them using CD133-based magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) compared to cell cultures of healthy, non-malignant ovaries and ascites from recurrent ovarian cancer to prove their embryonic character. The gene discussed is PROM1; the disease is ovarian cancer.
