Interestingly, along with clear hallmarks of alternate macrophage activation (IL-10 secretion, CD163 and CD206 gene expression), we also observe an elevated macrophage secretion of IL-6, which is not typically associated with M2 macrophages, but is observed in bipolar tumor associated macrophage populations in the malignant ascites of ovarian cancer [11, 29]. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is neoplasm.
