Hypoxic cells, such as those present in tumors or atherosclerotic plaques, may release angiogenic growth factors, and we have previously shown that hypoxia levels are higher in C-PVAT compared to IMA-PVAT and that this difference may underlie the increased expression of leptin, an adipokine with proangiogenic properties, in the C-PVAT of CAD patients [20].
