ICAM1 and atherosclerosis: Although our study cannot provide a definite answer to the important question of whether the observed increased lymphangiogenesis in C-PVAT is the consequence of the existing atherosclerosis in human coronary arteries or one of its causes, the increased expression of ICAM1, infiltration with macrophages, and fibrosis observed in C-PVAT appear to be in accordance with the concept of reactive, i.e. inflammation- or fibrosis-induced, adventitial lymphangiogenesis.
