By comparing co-cultures of CAFs with cancer cells that were either p53-null or harboring mutant p53 alleles, we were able to identify a mutant p53-dependent signature in the CAFs, indicating an interferon-β (IFN-β) response elicited by the CAFs and triggered non-cell autonomously by the presence of mutant p53 in the cancer cells. The gene discussed is IFNB1; the disease is cancer.
