Several purported pathophysiologic mechanisms for developing BIA-ALCL, possibly working in concert, have been put forth, including implant immunogenicity due to silicone or its degradation products from textured implants, a genetic susceptibility rendering a host autoimmune response, an IL-13 associated allergic response, or inflammation triggered by bacterial biofilm1,2,4,7,8. Here, IL13 is linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
