Although a certain degree of cross-reactivity between BP180 and/or BP230 brain and skin isoforms exist (78), a recent study (79) evidenced that in Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis patients the autoantibodies against BP180 targeted epitopes different than those targeted in patients with BP and did not bind natively folded BP180, thus suggesting their low potential to induce BP. Here, COL17A1 is linked to multiple sclerosis.
