Remarkably, several factors involved in maintaining stem and cancer cell quiescence such as bone morphogenetic protein 4 (Bmp4), Bmp6, and Bmp7; kit ligand (Kitl); Tgfb2; Dickkopf-related protein 1 (Dkk1) and Dkk3; and thombospondin2 (Thbs2) were upregulated in bones of young mice (Figure 4, F and G, and Supplemental Figure 6B). The gene discussed is BMP4; the disease is cancer.
