Whilst decreased density of oligodendrocytes in the white matter subjacent to the PFC has been observed,35 other studies found no changes.36–38 Several studies have investigated astrocytes in the white matter predominantly below the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) from post mortem brains of people with schizophrenia using glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) at the protein or mRNA level as a marker, but once again consistency is lacking. The gene discussed is GFAP; the disease is schizophrenia.
