Maternal infection is a risk factor for schizophrenia and in support of this notion we recently showed that prenatal exposure to maternal immune activation particularly in late gestation, resulted in increased SST+ IWMN density in the corpus callosum of the adult rat offspring similar to what is observed in post mortem brains in schizophrenia.79 When this increase in density of SST+ IWMNs occurred during development in response to maternal immune activation is still to be determined. Here, SST is linked to schizophrenia.
