MAPT and Alzheimer disease: AD is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by senile plaques consisting of misfolded β-amyloid (Aβ) fibrils and oligomers (Iadanza et al., 2018), as well as hyperphosphorylated tau protein in the various regions of the brain including cerebral cortex, locus coeruleus, and hippocampus (Llorens et al., 2017).
