CXCL10 and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: The first attempts to investigate biomarkers in virus-associated exacerbations as a specific phenotype were made from the East London Cohort.61 In this study, human rhinovirus (HRV) infection was examined in healthy controls and COPD patients at stable state and during exacerbation.61 Baseline CXCL10 (interferon gamma inducible protein 10) was higher in COPD than controls, but at exacerbation, there was an increase in serum CXCL10 in HRV positive exacerbations, correlating with sputum HRV virus load, and no increase in HRV negative exacerbations.
