Oxidative stress caused by overnutrition often induces GLUT-4 inactivation by carbonylation and oxidation (Boden et al., 2015), and related gene variants (Stenbit et al., 1997) often lead to GLUT-4 deficiency and downregulation in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue (Zisman et al., 2000; Abel et al., 2001). The gene discussed is SLC2A4; the disease is overnutrition.
