Obesity, another risk factor for insulin resistance, induces alterations in monocytes and macrophages, stimulating the production of chemokines and cytokines (i.e., monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 [MCP-1/CCL2], IL-6, IL8, IL-1β, TNF-α), and leads to insulin resistance in target cells by activating c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and I-Kappa-B-Kinase-Beta (IKKβ/NF-κB) pathways [12, 29].
