Two human host receptors for PfEMP1 binding in the context of severe malaria have been identified: the InterCellular Adhesion Molecule-1 receptor (ICAM-1) [14] and the Endothelial Protein C Receptor (EPCR) [15], both expressed in brain endothelial cells [16], and co-localized with the sequestered iEs in severe malaria [14]. This evidence concerns the gene ICAM1 and malaria.
