While upon infection with DNA-encoded alpha-herpesvirus and gamma-herpesvirus, such as herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1)22, varicella zoster virus23, and murine gammaherpesvirus 6824, cGAS/STING signaling was needed to limit virus replication and to promote protection, the role of STING during the pathogenesis of CMV infection is less well understood. This evidence concerns the gene CGAS and cytomegalovirus infection.
