Table 1 summarizes clinicopathological factors by histology and sex (S1 Table summarizes all investigated factors). While the incidence of lung adenocarcinoma increased overall, the incidence of squamous cell carcinoma decreased in men and increased in women. In both subtypes, women had a higher education, were more often never-smokers, younger, and presented with better performance status at diagnosis, compared to men. In adenocarcinoma, women also had a lower comorbidity burden, presented with less advanced stage, and more often had EGFR positive tumors. Here, EGFR is linked to squamous cell carcinoma.
